“I was so pissed off about the CHEAP shirt stays, I had to do something about it”
In 2009 I was a cop in North Carolina. Like all cops, law enforcement and military members, my uniform was a vital part of my day. Not only was I expected to look professional, but my uniform was a functional part of my job that I took pride in.
When my shirt would come untucked, it didn’t just look bad, it created a distraction. And as you probably know, distractions in a cops line of work can be deadly.
The solution at the time, just like now, is to use a shirt stay to keep your shirt tucked. The only problem was that all of the shirt stays in the market were cheap, plastic, over-seas junk. They never did their job, and it was getting in the way of my ability to do my job.
One day, I was getting out of my patrol car to chase a suspect on foot and my shirt stays popped off. I finally had enough. I was so pissed off about the cheap shirt stays, I had to do something about it.
I knew I could make something better. So I did.
For months, I sat at my kitchen table with a sewing needle making different versions of shirt stays - Stronger versions. A shirt stay with metal clips, strong, durable elastic, and a tight grip that wouldn’t come undone.
When I showed them to my partner and squad, they had to have them, and they all loved them. I became a minor celebrity in the department - no kidding, I used to drive around making hand deliveries to guys in the field.
That’s how I started.
